Movie Box Sets

Introduction

A box set, which is also referred to as a boxset or a boxed set, is a compilation of movies, tv shows, documentaries, or other filmed footage. A box set will usually have a theme, such as a collection of films by an individual writer / film studio / director or actor/actress, films on a specific subject such as horror or sci-fi, films in a series such as The Godfather, or an entire season/series of a tv programme. It's unusual to find a box set with an unrelated collection of material.

Alongside the nuts and bolts of a boxset, i.e., the film or tv show, most boxsets will attempt to entice new and old fans of it's genre by including special features. Some of the most common bundled features are; commentaries with cast and crew, interviews with cast and crew, the making of documentary, behind the scenes, out take reels, deleted scenes, trailers, photo gallery, and production notes.

Currently, the top selling boxed sets tend to be television programme seasons/series. Perhaps this is because they lend themselves more easily to the boxed set structure, than do movies. A series of films, such as The Godfather, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park etc., occur only a few times a decade. Whereas, most television programmes have more than one episode, and they usually run into the tens of episodes.

The battle for box set dominance is fought out between UK and US television shows. Because US shows tend to have more episodes, they probably have the edge, but it's a close run thing. The downside to more episodes, is that box sets of popular US shows such as Mad Men, Damages, The West Wing, Lost, 24 and The Sopranos usually rrp at thirty pounds or more. Whereas box sets of UK shows like The Office, Fawlty Towers, Life on Mars etc., usually have under eight episodes and retail below twenty pounds.
