Introduction

Band of Brothers is a TV series from HBO, which was also screened by the BBC on BBC Two. It follows the escapades of Easy Company, part of the US Army, from their initial training in England for the D-day landing, till the end of war in Europe. The episodes are based on accounts from members of Easy Company, and this is highlighted at the start of each episode, which features an short interview with the veterans. The series includes ten episodes, with each episode costing twelve million dollars to make. Many critics have likened the quality of the episodes to short films, rather than a TV show.

The series did win many awards, but received a mix response from the critics. Though it's visual quality and realism were commended, the plot and character development were deemed flawed. With the episodes moving from one character to the next, many critics had a job understanding who was who, which produced a muddled organisation in their opinion.

I consider my Band of Brother box set a bargain. I picked it up for ten pounds from Amazon, and it even comes in a swanky metal tin. Apart from the episodes, you get the usual extras, an interview with the men of easy company, behind the scenes, a ron livingston interview and a few more docu's. The drama itself steadily grew on me. I cannot claim that any of the actors did a stand out job, none were remarkable imo, but the storylines and excitement produced by the director were enough to keep me gripped. Unlike with the majority of WW2 films, you learn alot more about the key battles the US army faced, the movies generally tend to gloss over the fact that after d-day it was not a cake walk defeating the Germans. Ofc, Band of Brothers tends to make the Brits look like idiots, but that's to be expected. Each episodes likes to tell a tale from a different member of easy company, showing the different challenges which faced the men. At the beginning this is very confusing, and I can see why it stopped many people from watching the whole series. But by the third episode I had slowly got used to this style of story telling, and it does give you a wider perspective of the whole company, rather than sticking to a primary character. I think this is misunderstood by the critics, this is a story about the whole of Easy Company, not just one member. And by and large it does a fine job. By the end, I really grew attached to the characters, something which was unexpected, if I judged my response to the first episodes. Overall, a very satisfying and professionally put together miniseries.
