Beverly Hills Cop Box SetsHome >Introduction Beverly Hills Cop is probably the movie Eddie Murphy is best remembered for. He stars as Axel Foley, a Detroit cop who lives on his quick wits. The plot of the original movie surrounds a old buddy who comes back home from LA to pay Axel a visit. By the end of the night Axel's friend is murdered, and Axel sets a course to LA to find the perpetuators. Axel soon finds himself not welcomed by the local police, cue a class of cultures with the residents of the plush district of Beverly Hills. Of course you can guess the result of the movie. The follow on films see varying reasons for Axel's return to LA, usually to unmask a villain of similar proportions.
The original movie proved a huge success, and bankrolled Eddie Murphy as an A-list star, the follow on films received a luke warm response from the critics. Beverly Hills Cop Reviewsmike Said, Beverly Hills Cop still has a place in my affections, probably because I'm a child of the eighties. It had been at least a decade since I had last seen it. The trilogy was heavily discounted online, so I decided a trip down memory lane was in order. The movies have dated since my last viewing. The storylines in all the films are weak, standard Hollywood fare. They only appear a vehicle for the talents of Eddie Murphy. But, there is nothing wrong with that, Eddie was and is a huge star, and in the first film he is on fine form. The joy of the first two films is Eddie's verbal sparring with the excellent John Ashton as Detective Sergeant John Taggart and Judge Reinhold as Detective William 'Billy' Rosewood. I would rate the original as 8/10, it starts with a bang, has the best jokes of all three, and the plot is the strongest and most believable. Tony Scott makes a valiant effort with part 2, but I would rate it as no better than average entertainment. At least it still has the key components of the original. Part 3 is the real disappointment, and the unexplainable removal of John Taggart is beyond belief. Part 3 really drags in places, the last 30-60 minutes are a complete yawn time. The final fight out in the amusement part is such a cliché, and that stereo system which double as a weapon is laughable naff. I'd rate the Beverly Hills Cop trilogy as one of the weakest trilogies available, but it's worth a punt if it's discounted. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Add a Review
