Introduction

Life on Mars is a hugely successful British drama series, which has won both Emmy and BAFTA awards. It was originally broadcast on the BBC, but has been remade, starring Harvey Keitel for the ABC network in America. The programme has also been classified as science fiction, with a 'Back to the Future' genre combination of standard drama and time travel. The premise of Life On Mars concerns a modern day DCI of the Manchester Police, Sam Tyler, who enters into a coma, and is transported back to 1973. There then comes a class of cultures, and police investigations which link to Sam's attempt to awaken out of his coma.

With great acting, an inspired idea, and good production values, Life On Mars is one of the top television series from the UK.

Life On Mars Reviews

I did not watch Life On Mars when it was broadcast on BBC One. I came across it later, when Amazon heavily discounted the boxsets, and the reviews seemed so positive and OTT, I realised I must be missing out on something. From the first episode I knew I had made a massive mistake thinking this series was the standard light entertainment fare produced by the BBC eta 'New Tricks' etc. This was obviously something special, I was simple blown away to be honest. Nearly open mouthed in shock, I didn't think the BBC released programmes of this quality and originality. Philip Glenister as DCI Hunt is a treat, totally anti PC, and the sparring between himself and John Simm as DC Sam Tyler has a wonderful chemistry. Not only does this series contain great acting, a wonderful script, great jokes, believable 70's set and language, it has an additional ingredient. A mystery. Is Sam in the 70's, is it his imagination?, you never know, it gets you thinking, and alongside great cop stories, Life On Mars just has more intrigue than any UK series I've ever watched. I have to say I enjoyed series 1 over series 2. Apart from the last episode, series 2 seems a little bit padded out. They could have tacked on the last episode to series 1, and you wouldn't be missing out on much. That said, series 2 is still a hoot. If you haven't seen this series, you really should, few programmes provide as much fun, laughs and entertainment.
