The Office Box SetsHome >Introduction The Office is the creation of Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais. With each episode running in a thirty minute slot, it was first aired on BBC Two in 2001. The show ran for two series, with six episodes in each series, and two Christmas Special episodes. The programme is a spoof 'behind the scenes' documentary surrounding Wernham Hogg, a paper merchant in Slough, England. The star of the show is Ricky Gervais, who plays David Brent, the boss of the Slough office.
The Office was a critical success, winning awards in the UK and abroad. It was the first UK comedy series to win a Best Television Series from the Golden Globes. It has also been adapted for US television by NBC, which star Steve Carell. The Office Reviewsmike Said, One of my favourite UK comedy series. It took me some time to appreciate it's humour. Some of my friends found the show a little depressing, and I can understand that. That was my initial response, it's a little too realistic at times, and I suspect most office workers in the UK can identify work colleagues who are similar to the characters in this TV series. It could be one of those programmes you either love or hate. Personally, I would rate the office the best UK comedy series for a generation. And I am not surprised it has won so many awards, and has been adapted for foreign TV. Now comes a spoiler to those who have not watched the office. The first series concentrates on the news of job losses at Wernham Hogg, and the combining of the Slough and Swindon offices, which of course is ineptly handled by David. We then have the mutual attraction of Dawn Tinsley and Tim Canterbury. Another interesting character is Chris Finch 'Finchy', a sales rep and verbal bully, who David attempts to raid the coat tales of. This usually results in David becoming the butt of Finch's jokes. The series ends with David being offered a promotion, but fails the medical, which means the job is taken by the boss of the Swindon office. Cue series 2, and David's jealousy to his new boss, and he's deteriating relationship with his new employees from Swindon. The series finale is the sacking of David and Tim's failed attempt to woe Dawn, which ends with Dawn moving to America. A mistake I made was not buying the Christmas specials dvd, I did not think it was needed. Oh how I was wrong. A year later I managed to watch the re-runs on a cable channel. These episodes provide closure to the series, a wonderful ending with David finally standing up to Finchy, and Dawn and Tim finally getting it together. I was pleasantly surprised at how moving I found the final episodes, probably Only Fools and Horses has matched the emotion for a comedy programme, when delboy and rodney finally strike it rich. This comedy series should not be missed, stick with it and it will provide immense enjoyment for years to come. I am not sure the word 'genius' applies, but this programme is close to it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Add a Review
