The Simpsons Box SetsHome >Introduction The Simpsons is an animated thirty minute sitcom, which parodies the follies and vices of the fictional inhabitants of Springfield. The Simpsons family, which comprises Homer, Madge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie, are the main characters focused upon. But, there is a huge array of supporting characters which are featured in the majority of episodes. Such as Barney, Moe, Skinner, Apu, Chief Wiggum, Mr Burns, Millhouse, Lenny and Karl. The voices of the characters are performed by a small band of actors, who provide the voices for multiple characters. Some of the most notable actors are Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright and Yeardley Smith. The Simpsons has been one of the longest running TV shows (over 400 episodes), debuting in 1989. It first appeared as a short in 'The Tracey Ullman Show' in 1987. The Simpsons has always been broadcast on the Fox network in the US, and it's creator is Matt Groening. The show was first broadcast by BSkyB in the UK, and this broadcaster remains the first to air new episodes. BBC Two was the first terrestial channel to air The Simpsons in the UK, but this has since transferred to Channel 4. The Simpsons has won awards worldwide, and is probably the most popular TV series currently running.
While The Simpsons movie received mixed reviews, the boxsets of the episodes remain hugely popular. The Simpsons Reviewsmike Said, I own season three and four of the Simpsons. I have to say I began to stop buying them on dvd because the episodes are still widely air'd on TV. I have to admit the boxsets are fantastic value for money, season four cost me thirteen quid and contains twenty two episodes. You also get audio commentary on every episode and a few featurettes. As a fan from the genesis of simpsons broadcasts in the UK, the problem is, I've seen most of the episodes dozen's of times. Which is of course my problem. But I get the feeling anyone else with a passing interest in the simpsons will be in the same boat. Apart from the new episodes, the rest of the seasons have been repeated twenty or thirty times on sky one, BBC two and c4. I have to say I personally enjoy seasons 6-11 on average. I find the original episodes lacking in jokes, with too much storyline taking centre stage. The aging animation, particularly in season 1-2 are also off putting now, I am too used to the fancy bells and whistles of the new episodes. The middle seasons have a nice combination of original jokes and modern animation. While the new seasons include superior animation, I must say I do not enjoy them as much. The laugh out loud jokes are few and far between, and the storylines are growing tired and over used. This is to be expected however. Personally I'd like the secondary characters expanded further and given more air time. Overall, the simpsons is a wonderful TV show, with some of the funniest content I have ever witnessed, but with the episodes still being air'd daily, I'd only recommend the boxsets to the serious hardcore fans. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Add a Review
